Christian allegorical novelist Walter Wangerin Jr. once compared stories to the ravens that fed Elijah in the wilderness when he was in despair about his mission. Stories don't have to be perfectly written (whatever that means!) to save your life by giving form to your frighteningly formless emotional upheaval. I think it was in that same sermon that he compared this to God separating the waters above and below, the light from the darkness, in Genesis.
